What’s new with HTA?
HTA has been together since the spring of 2006, 9 years. When it started, for the first couple months, it was just the girls. Until they brought on Garth and fellow UofW theatre student Grant Burr. Our first show was at the Winnipeg Fringe that summer and it was a success. In 2008 we staged our second show, Hands Off, and Grant bowed out to focus on his growing family. We brought in Ryan for Hands Off and since then, our group has kept the same line up. 7 Years of the group you know.
But this year, like One Direction, this fivesome must too say goodbye to our ethnically-ambiguous member with fabulous hair. Jacquie Loewen has opted to bow out to pursue her “solo career” of acting, directing, fight directing, and just generally being Jacquie Loewen™. Jacquie is currently in Vancouver where she’s assistant directing Bard on the Beach. After that, she’ll be appearing in RMTC’s production of Alice in Wonderland in November. Within the year she’ll be developing her own physical theatre show.
We couldn’t be more excited for both Jacquie’s solo endeavours, and also the future of HTA. Due to busy schedules, we’ve been performing as 4 members for most of our Non-Fringe performances for the past few years any way, and so we’ve transitioned very easily. It may mean less “Good Time Girls,” and maybe a different “Pizza Shack,” but we’ve got all sorts of great other characters and sketches coming your way.
And Jacquie isn’t dead. It’s highly likely that you’ll see her on stage with us at some point in the future. Because she loves her whores. And her whores love her back.
Our new show opening next week at the Winnipeg Fringe “Hot Thespian Action: Back In Black” will be a testament to how much fun we’re still having as a foursome. We can’t wait for you to see it. Jacquie will be back on opening night watching it, along with the rest of you. If you see her, take a minute to wish her well in her new path, and thank her for all the good memories.
In honour of Jacquie, here is one our favourite Jacquie sketches: Pizza Shack.
Winnipeg Comedy Fest may be done (and what a great time we had) but we’re far from retreating back into the pits from whence we came. We’re very excited to be partaking in TWO exciting shows in the coming weeks. Here’s everything you need to know:
H.U.N.K.S. is a brand new sketch troupe that’s sprung up from a bunch of local comics. They blend video and live sketch, to bring you a manic rollercoaster of a show, if that rollercoaster ran on rocket fuel instead of regular old rollercoaster fuel. H.U.N.K.S. is Tim Gray, Quinn Greene, Sam McLean, Matt Nightingale, Dana Smith skillfully directed by Rory Fallis. Providing cutting-edge musical accompaniment is local beat boxer Kane David Greene. We’ve been dying to see a “sketch scene” emerge in Winnipeg for years now, so we couldn’t be more excited to help these awesome comedians launch their new venture!
We couldn’t be more excited to be launching our brand-spanking-new website! Welcome! Here you will find everything you’ve ever needed to know about HTA. And I’m sure lots of stuff you didn’t care to know at all! Take a minute to explore.
This week is the Winnipeg Comedy Festival; one of our favourite times of year. We’re performing in three separate shows this week. Here is everything you need to know about them!
1. Funny You Should Ask – Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba Fundraiser – Tuesday, April 7th. Us, alongside some great comics in support of a great cause!
2. Hot Thespian Action Uncorked– Thursday, April 9th. Our headlining show with special guests (and good friends) Bucko and Wes Borg from Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie. This will be a fun exciting show because for most people, the content will be almost all new! We’re featuring one or two recent “fan favourites” but otherwise the material will all be either BRAND new, or “remastered.” In other words we took forgotten gem sketches from years gone by, looked at them with fresh eyes, and with the writing skills we’ve since developed from doing this for 10 years (!) and totally revamped them. We’re super excited to show you these new and improved super-sketches!
3. Fifty Shades of Gay – Us and some fantastic other acts (like our awesome too-successful for her own good friend Chantel Marostica) celebrating all things GLBTQ* with our good friend Darcy Michael hosting.

We’re back from our great American adventure, performing at both the Chicago SketchFest and San Francisco SketchFest, within the span of a few weeks! It was a whirlwind adventure, but we had a great time performing to sold out, super receptive crowds and meeting some great, very talented, very funny people. This comes at the tail end of a year that saw us perform to sold out crowds in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Seattle. It’s been a crazy/fun/successful year away from the nest, but it’s time to return home and give some love to the Winnipeg audiences that launched us!
This summer HTA will be returning to the Fringe with a show of BRAND NEW MATERIAL and we can’t wait to be back. But Winnpeggers don’t have to wait to July for some new HTA! Today the Winnipeg Comedy Festival announced their lineup and we’re very excited to let you know that come April, Winnipeggers will have 3 chances to catch us perform. Here they are. Click on the links for more info and to purchase tickets:
1. Funny You Should Ask – Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba Fundraiser – Us, alongside some great comics in support of a great cause!
2. Hot Thespian Action Uncorked– Our headlining show with special guests (and good friends) Bucko and Wes Borg from Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie. We’ll be featuring some of our ‘vintage’ favourites as well as a selection of ‘fresh from the vine’ new material, and maybe even a ‘blend’ of classic-but-revamped special edition gems!
3. Fifty Shades of Gay – Us and some fantastic other acts celebrating all things GLBTQ* with our good friend Darcy Michael hosting.

Big News! We’ve been sitting on a big announcement for a while now because we’ve been waiting to get all our ducks in a row with all the legalities of it all… but we can’t hold back the news any longer, so screw it! HTA has been invited to attend Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival and San Francisco Sketch Fest and we could not be more thrilled to attend! We’ve been eyeing up these festivals for years now, and to get invited to go down and see some of the best Sketch in the world, performed by some of the best performers and then get to show what we do too is a huge honour!
Just to give you an idea of some of the star power at these festivals, here’s a short list of some of the performers: Maya Rudolph, Cristopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Weird Al, Penn & Teller, Bill Nye, the cast of News Radio, Broken Lizard, Cary Elwes, the voice cast of Animaniacs, Angela Kinsey, Kristen Schaal, Casey Wilson, Dani Pudi, John Cho, Janeane Garofolo, Jennifer Tilly, The Groundlings, Upright Citizen’s Brigade, Sasheer Zamata, Garfunkel & Oates, Margaret Cho, Maria Bamford, T.J. Miller…. and seriously, the list goes ON and ON and ON….. It’s gonna be bonkers. You can read all about Chicago SF here, and all about San Fran SF here.
In anticipation of that, we sat down with a comedy blog based out of Sydney Australia called Illegitimate Theatre to talk about our group, our upcoming journey south (and the legal headache associated with it), our writing process, what makes us unique as a troupe, and a lot more. You can listen to the whole interview in their INAUGURAL podcast below. Bonus: We also give some scoop on the long-in-the-works sitcom pilot we’ve been working on.
And stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter over the next month to follow our journey and hear all about this crazy month.
